I downloaded the Linux viewer, extracted to a folder, made the PortSensor bin executable (chmod +x PortSensor) but when I run it nothing loads and no errors are displayed from the console.

Any way to display something like a debug mode? Nothing even flashes on the screen. I'm using OpenSuse 11.

    Thanks.

Hello. We're working to see if we can duplicate the issue you are seeing in OpenSuse. There is supposed to be a "log" folder containing a file called portsensor.log in your PortSensor installation folder. I'm assuming that that's not being created in your copy for whatever reason. We'll let you know more if we're able to reproduce this so we can figure out the problem or get a fix out for you.

Correct. It doesn't appear to be getting that far:

The problem appears to be related to the fact I'm running the 64 bit version of OpenSuSE. I tried PortSensor on my seperate, 32 bit OpenSuSE system and it opened up and did create a log folder.

Why would it not run on 64 bit systems even though other 32 bit java apps do?

Also, I still can't send out a test email. When I hit the button to do so the program hangs for 1-2 minutes and then comes back to normal. However, the email does not send out. The logs say it's sent but there are no errors and it doesn't go.

I'm sorry for the delays replying to you. I'm trying to get a system with an environment similar to yours to see for myself. Ideally there would be no reason that PortSensor should not work on a 64 bit system.

In the meantime, as for your test email issue, you have set your mail settings correctly right? Make sure you're leaving the "Use SMTP Authentication" unchecked if you're not actually using SMTP auth on your SMTP server.

The log file should show an error line if anything went wrong in the process. What does your log file show? Perhaps if we can't draw any other conclusions we could get a test account for your mail server to be allowed to use your SMTP server ourselves.

    Hey Mike,

The email server does use smtp authentication and I'm trying using the same email account we use in our cerberus setup (which has no trouble sending out with authentication). I've also tested with other email accounts from different locations. For example, my home ATT connection requires to use their outbound smtp server (which also requires using port 465 with encryption) and a Comcast connection with their smtp server (also requiring port 465 with encryption).

Anything I can do to help speed up troubleshooting? I have this rolling with several clients and the lack of alerts is killing me.

I found a problem where SMTP auth with encryption wasn't working. I've fixed it and tested it with Gmail's servers and the notification mails are sending without issue. It would be helpful if you could create a mail account for us on your server so we could make sure it will work for you as well. If that's possible, you can email us the server and auth info at support@portsensor.com .

    Hey Mike,

I sent over an email with test acct info. If you could also test with say an ATT (Yahoo) acct using encryption that'd be helpful as well.

    Thanks!

I can now confirm Portsensor does not work with the 64 bit jre. When I installed the 64 bit JRE 6u10 from Sun's site and went to run PortSensor from console, nothing. When I removed that and installed the 32 bit version of the same, PortSensor fired right up.

I installed it on the mail server, used localhost as the smtp server, and the test went out fine with no stalling.

So, if I could get the version of Portsensor that works with secure smtp authentication and if you could look into why portsensor doesn't work with a 64 bit JRE that would be great. I'll be happy to test however needed. Please understand though, it's a huge priority for me to get the version with secure smtp authentication as soon as possible. You can email it over if that's easiest.

Last week I managed to get a solution implemented in the PortSensor codebase for SSL/TLS SMTP that should work for you. I can get a new build out in the next day or so.

Get a chance to button this one up yet? Looking forward to it.

This issue was discussed further in a private support ticket. Bluecc was able to get SMTP over SSL to work for him by switching to using the Sun 1.6JRE with the plugins package.
