I was wondering what people have come across as the easiest way to do snmp checks? I know in a previous post (way back) Jeff mentioned SNMP checks were added in but I don't see where and fear this was versions ago:
Here's a scenario of what we're trying to do. A server at a remote site currently reports back to our PortSensor server. We see all the expected ping, disk space, etc monitors. However, we'd like to to poll Windows machines on the network via SNMP (SNMP is enabled on the workstations). In turn, this would allow us to remotely monitor all workstations on the network without having to install software on those workstations. We're looking to monitor the typical things such as ping response, memory usage, disk space, etc.
Yeah, that forum post is from an older version of PortSensor from back when the viewer performed the actual monitoring.
In the current version you can monitor SNMP if you set up the monitor app on each machine you wish to monitor. You could then use any SNMP command line tool like: http://packages.debian.org/etch/scli
I realize that what you're after sounds to be more like something that means needing to install less monitors. That is something that could very well fit into our ongoing development on the next version of PortSensor. The newer version will have more common sensor checks possible without installing anything on the servers being monitored, so it's just an extension from that idea for SNMP.
